The "Four Hundred Stanzas" was written by Arya Deva
who was the foremost disciple of Nagarjuna, the
great Buddhist logician. Even though Arya Deva was
born in Sri Lanka, he arrived in South India to
study under Nagarjuna. He became a great scholar
like his teacher and wrote Four Hundred Stanzas as a
supplementary to Nagarjuna's "Root Wisdom". It has
sixteen Chapters. The first eight explains the
Conventional Truth and the other eight about the
Ultimate Truth.
The Buddha taught that ignorance is the root cause
of all our suffering. The ignorance in this context
is not merely lack of understanding but rather a
misconception of our perception which fabricates the
nature of phenomena and the self which is
responsible for our clinging dearly to the self,
possessions, friends, fame, status and so forth
which in turn brings frustration and agitation.
Enquiry into understanding this nature and ridding
of the misconception and understand the true nature
of the self is known as realization of emptiness
which brings peace and tranquilty because it stops
anger, desire and greed.
It will help bring about awareness of the self and
make a new discovery about oneself and others. It is
therefore suitable for every one who is interested
in discovering oneself.
